It’s summer for the rest of the world but for the little archipelago scattered across the Indian Ocean, it has always been so. Take some time off to relax and unwind in paradise, as Maldives takes you on a journey of serenity, luxury and elegance.

Explore ancient caves, overhangs and greet its multicolored residents. Dive deep into the blues with dolphins, whalesharks, manta rays and turtles. A team of experts is always at your helm and no prior experience is required. Whether you are a novice or an experienced diver, some of the most diverse and pristine diving sites welcome you here, ready to take your breath away.

Take a day off to revitalize, rejuvenate and pamper yourself. Soothe your body, mind and soul with ancient ayurvedic treatments, Balinese massages and therapies. The world’s first underwater spa beckons you here, offering new wellness packages where schools of colorful fish swim right by as you enjoy an exfoliating massage while the tranquility of the ocean surrounds you.

Adrenaline junkies rejoice, as plenty of options remain for you to quench your thirst. Have your pick between paddle boarding, parasailing, kayaking, fun tube, banana boat and waterskiing in world-class watersports centres. If you don’t want to get wet, glass-bottomed boats, dolphin cruises and whale watching are ways to explore Maldivian waters.

Surfers of all kinds flock to the Maldives to catch the perfect wave. Boasting world-renowned surfing spots, most of them are located near the capital, often a quick speedboat ride away from the international airport. The reef chains have waves all year round, with the biggest waves occurring from June till October. While some breaks such as Pasta Point, Honky’s and Lohis are great for left footers, others such as Cokes, Jailbreaks and Sultans are ideal for right footers.

Hop aboard a cruising safari and go on a journey across the Maldives. The traditional fishing vessel, the dhoni as your home for the week, travel from one remote island to the other, taking the path less trodden. Explore pristine snorkeling spots, stop by at uninhabited islands for a swim, go on the hunt for some coconuts and have a beach barbecue set up with the catch of the day as your meal.

From chocolate tasting rooms to homemade gelato, experimental gastronomical delights and fine wine pairings, the Maldives offers some exquisite culinary adventures. From authentic Maldivian dinner spreads with local families to grand buffets with food from across the globe, options here are endless. Be it dinner under the stars at a secluded sandbank, barbecue under the mid-afternoon sun, poolside drinks, or even a three course gourmet meal at the world’s first underwater restaurant, the venues are breathtaking.

Sunny all year round, the Maldives offers the discerning traveller an array of options from luxury to adventure and everything in between. Together with top-notch service and second to none luxury, the glistening turquoise waters, palm fringed beaches and the tropical sun makes the Maldives the ideal summer holiday destination.

The Maldives, Asia’s smallest country is an archipelago situated in the warm Indian Ocean and seems far away from anywhere. On the world map, 26 atolls appear as dots in a vast ocean. As a first time visitor you may wonder how to tackle planning and implementing your tropical island getaway to this unique and extraordinary part of the globe. It’s actually not as difficult as you think. Read on to find the basic tricks and tips for the first time visitor to the Maldives.

With air travel as it is today, the Maldives has become very accessible. The Male International Airport is also called Velana International Airport. If you read about Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, that was once its name. It is a busy airport receiving flights from all over the world and depending on the time of the day, up to about 13 flights can come in per hour. Popular routes are via the Middle East, Singapore and India. Velana International Airport has its own island and once you have disembarked, transfer to your resort is usually either via boat or seaplane, depending on the distance. Many of the luxury resorts arrange transfer and however you get to your hotel will be a unique part of the Maldivian adventure.

Resorts are spread across the island chain. The Maldives is made up of about 1190 islands and of those about 106 are island resorts, so you are spoiled for choice. Choosing a luxury resort depends on what you would like to do on your vacation. If it is a family vacation, you will need a resort that caters for the whole family and there are many of those. Choose a resort that has tailor made packages and facilities that will meet the needs of your children’s age group. Most of the resorts have babysitting facilities, kid’s clubs and entertainment for tweens and teenagers. With the younger members of the family both protected and entertained, it leaves the adults to have a relaxing, stress free holiday.

If you are on honeymoon, there are many resorts that offer secluded and private accommodation ideal for newly weds. Not only that, look out for special offers relating to honeymooners. There are many luxury resorts that go out of their way to accommodate couples who are taking this first and very special post -wedding vacation, so if you fall into that category, be sure to look up some of the top honeymoon resorts such as the Lux, Lily Beach and Taj Exotica to name a few.

When researching your first trip to the Maldives, look out for out of season specials. There are many of these which can include extra free days or special half board offers. If your time of the year is flexible, this would be an ideal time to choose to visit the island. The weather is warm all year round, so whenever you go you should get the tropical island experience.

There are many options as to what to do during your vacation including water sports and activities such as diving and snorkelling. The underwater life is spectacular and fishing excursions can be arranged. Most holiday makers go for a relaxing sea front experience where you can lounge on the beach, read a book, swim and soak up the majestic surroundings. All the luxury resorts have spa treatments to increase your opportunity to relax.

The currency of the Maldives is the Maldivian Rufiyaa. It would be a good idea to bring some local currency on your holiday, although US$ are widely accepted. Be sure to bring in small denominations of US$ as they are a very welcome when it comes to tipping.

You do not need a pre arrival visa to enter the Maldives. When you arrive you will be issued with a free 30-day tourist visa conditional to you having a legitimate passport.

The Maldives is an archipelago of tropical islands, far, far away in the middle of the warm Indian Ocean. Its nearest neighbor is Sri Lanka which is hundreds of miles away. It you want a vacation where the pace is slow, the pampering level high and memories last forever, the Maldives is the place to visit. Two great options while you are there are to have a picnic on a sandbank and to enjoy staring up at the canopy of stars on a warm balmy night.

Picnic on a Sandbank

Sandbanks are aplenty in the Maldives. Many of the resorts have sandbanks, large and small that are quite an experience to visit. Sandbanks vary in size – some are large and feel almost like desert islands. Others are small patches of sand that rise out of the ocean only to get swept beneath the sea with the incoming tide.

It is no problem to ask the resort to arrange a picnic. Imagine a strip of pure white sand just metres from warm sparkling sea ocean. You will have the opportunity to visit while the tide is out. Relax under an umbrella with your picnic basket at hand and enjoy the beauty of an amazing 360 degree view. Your resort will be able to advise you where best to enjoy a picnic on a sandbank. Not only can you request the picnic meal, but it is possible for you to also get your personal butler, who will meet your culinary needs.

If you are planning your own, make sure you have plenty of sunblock, an umbrella and that you check the tides so you maximize the opportunity while the tide is out.

Stargazing the Maldives Skies

With the Maldives being made up of 1200 islands, about 200 are home to the local Maldivian population while close to 100 are made up of tourist resorts. That leaves 900 unoccupied. There are plenty of places within the Maldives to enjoy a memorable night of stargazing. This is a tropical paradise where the moon seems bigger and brighter and the stars more vast in their expanse than you have ever noticed in your home city. Light pollution is not as common here and lying beneath the stars on a warm and balmy night is more spectacular than you would ever imagine.

To get the best stargazing experience in the Maldives, all you need is a clear night (moonless is best) and to be as far away as possible from any lights. A deserted beach, a blanket to lie on, a like-minded companion and you are good to begin. Serious stargazers may take a star chart and a small torch to assist. You can also take binoculars for a closer look. The internet has plenty of resources to see which planets are rising and setting at which time over the Maldives, which will help you identify what you are looking at. Venus, Jupiter and Saturn are frequently seen in the night sky. Apart from those, the sight and the splendour of the majestic canopy of stars will be stay with you long after you have returned home.

Stargazing. It’s hard not to do when visiting the Maldives.

The Banana Reef was the first dive site to be discovered in the Maldives. This banana shaped, protected region is situated in the North Male Atoll and ranges in depth from 5 to 30m, so it is popular for beginners and advanced divers alike.

The Banana Reef has become world renown for a number of reasons. It has amazing and unexpected landscapes such as a now famous pinnacle, as well as dramatic cliffs, overhangs and caves. The coral is bright and vivid. Explosions of colour make for an amazing underwater experience – bold yellow, various shades of pink, rose red, luminous green and lavender lilac marine invertebrate gather in their flamboyant communities, attracting a variety of equally as colourful fish.

It’s very popular for divers and snorkelers, eager to see both known and unexpected fellow swimmers. Barracuda, grouper and sharks will be hard to miss, but angel fish and parrot fish, and other smaller predators lurk in crevices of the Banana Reef waiting for their prey to pass by. The landscape is magnificent – different size plants, unusual textures, rocks and shells – shrubs and ferns – some look like spaghetti, others like fungi – all with a spot in this special place.

The fish who make this their home are varied and known by quirky and attractive names – Oriental sweetlips is a distinct fish with its black and yellow stripy body and spotted tail. Its name is clearly from a pair of pursed lips carefully painted in gentle pink. Squirrel and soldier fish are closely related – distinctive eyes, shiny scales, often orange and striped, they are members of the ray-finned fish family. Reef sharks, morays and stingray eels may be seen hanging out on the ocean floor, lazing around until something attractive or tasty lures them from their sandy bed. Giant clams, blowfish and Napoleon wrasse – you will meet some or all of them in these warm colourful waters.

Now that you are absolutely determined to put the Banana Reef on your Maldives itinerary, here is some of the practical advice that you must bear in mind. Safety first. Do be careful to use a reputable tour or diving guide who has sufficient safety and dive equipment for your excursion. Sometimes, the currents are strong, so a surface balloon is recommended. The best mode of transport is by speedboat with a guide. It is not far from the islands to the south of the North Male Atoll, so is easily accessible. Its proximity to these islands is the reason it was the first dive site discovered in the Maldives. Dive operators offer night dives, where seeing the incredible archipelago after dark is an experience on its own. If you have not got an underwater camera, you will be able to hire one.

The memories of visiting the Banana Reef will last a lifetime.

When visiting the Maldives, there’s a guarantee of warm weather and azure Indian Ocean. The combination is perfect for jet skiing. A jet ski is a large and stable motorized water vehicle that you sit astride as if you were riding a motor bike at sea. It can be a mode of transport to get from one island to another or it can be an adrenaline rush speed activity.

It’s a pastime that suits both young and old and therefore makes for a great deal of fun for the whole family. However, it is not available at all resorts in the Maldives as there are certain risks between motorised water activities and others which include diving and snorkelling. Those resorts which do offer jet skiing take all the necessary safety precautions for both those enjoying the ride and those in the ocean.

For safety purposes, choose a resort that has particular guidelines for jet skiing that is far from the divers, snorkelers or swimmers. The age limit for jet skiing generally is that drivers must be over the age of 18.

To jet ski responsibly, when looking for a resort that offers jet skiing ask the following questions:

Are they equipped with life-jackets?

Do they take an environmentally friendly approach to the water sport?

How loud are they?

Will they disturb the marine life or other holiday makers?

Do they come with a guide?

Atmosphere Kanifushi has thrilled many a visitor with their Jet Ski excursions. With the island being about 2km long, you are able to be on the water without disturbing other guests or harming marine life.

The award winning Kurumba resort in the Maldives is one of the resorts which aim at providing jet skiing facilities that are environmentally friendly, with modern craft that have both low emissions and noise levels. Kurumba have a water sports centre with various packages including jet skiing along with a number of different activities or on its own. Exploring aboard a jet ski offers you the opportunity to visit more remote islands, not accessible by any other craft. Kurumba uses experienced guides who offer excellent direction, ensuring an exhilarating water experience which is both safe and memorable.

Extreme Maldives also offers a number of water sport activities that are ideal for those wanting an adrenaline rush. Operating out of the Sheraton Hotels, they include jet skiing as an option. You can ride around the resort within their demarcated area or make use of a tour guide to take you further afield to explore uninhabited islands.

If you are at a resort that does not offer jet skiing as an activity, you may want to visit an island that does. Maafushi island is 26km from Male and offers amazing a number of activities including jet skiing.

These are just some of the options available for jet skiing in the Maldives. You won’t have to go far to get access to this super fun activity but do remember to respect your safety, those around you and the environment.
